NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Whew, here it is finally, the complete rewrite of Myth-X. Those of you who have read Myth-X in one of its previous incarnations will find that based on the final few episodes of the show, some of my ideas have changed–or more accurately–solidified in a manner that is slightly different from my initial analysis. There is now a Myth-X paperback available for purchase (see link to the right). As part of the publishing agreement the PDF has been removed from this site.

Do I still believe that the show’s mytharc narrative is mythic? Yes, I do. Would I have rather Mulder and Scully had kept their son and realized their “truth?” Definitely, although a part of me reluctantly understands why Chris Carter chose the ending he did. Hopefully I will be able to explain that position in what follows. Do I believe that everyone should agree with me? Not even remotely. Myths and stories are personal things, each assimilated according to one’s own beliefs and biases. What I do hope, is that by reading Myth-X one might be able to step back and watch the show through different eyes.

I know I’ve learned a great deal from all of the discussions and debates that I’ve engaged in over the years. This is dedicated to those folks who took the time to engage in those debates and who inspired me to take a fresh look at the story; and without whom I would have never seen the show as anything more than an entertaining, if somewhat baffling, hour out of my Sunday evening. Special thanks go to the patient members of the Myth-X email list, my husband Greg, and my wonderful friend Annelies, all of whom were subjected to both my ranting and my theories as they formed, many times out of incoherent ramblings. No one challenged me more than they did and for that I am very grateful. And finally my gratitude to Exobiologist for his contributions on the science and to Emily who tried to clean up my questionable grammar, as always any mistakes are entirely my own.

There is a general spoiler warning in effect for Myth-X. For clarity sake I have made no effort to keep the analysis spoiler free for episodes that aired later than the one being examined. I apologize in advance for any problems this may cause. The analysis is also now linear so you can page through as you would the PDF.
